Configure and manage meters
To accurately calculate your consumption and savings, it's important to properly configure and manage your meters. Each meter represents a time series and has specific properties that determine how the meter readings should be processed.
General properties of a meter
In EnergyID, each meter has several properties that are important for interpreting the meter readings. Here are the three key properties:
-
Metric: The metric of a meter indicate the energy or data flow being measured. This can include electricity off-take, electricity injection, solar power production (PV), or another specific flow.
-
Unit: The unit of a meter specifies the measurement unit used to quantify the metric. For electricity, this can be kilowatt-hour (kWh), for gas cubic meter (m³) or kilowatt-hour (kWh), and for water liter (L) or cubic meter (m³).
-
Reading type: The reading type refers to how the measurements are recorded, such as cumulative readings like in classic analog meters, interval values like daily totals, or snapshots at specific points in time.
If the results in your reports are not accurate, first check each of these three properties.
Excluding a meter from the reports
You may want to exclude certain meters from your reports. This could be the case for meters that are not relevant to your energy consumption reports or when they provide the same measurements as a meter already included in the reports.
To exclude a meter from the reports, follow these steps:
- Open your record and go to Meters.
- Click on the name of your meter and go to Properties.
- Disable the Include in reports option.
- Click Save.
Setting the processing period for a meter
When you have two meters with partially overlapping readings, it can be useful to set a processing period for one of the meters. This prevents double counting, for example, when creating an app connection for a meter for which you have previously entered manual meter readings.
To set the processing period, follow these steps:
- Open your record and go to Meters.
- Click on the name of your meter and go to Properties.
- Enter the start and/or end date in the Processing period field.
- Click Save.
Closing a meter
If a meter in your record is no longer in use, or if you have reached the maximum number of meters in your record and cannot add a new one, it may be useful to close a meter.
The readings of a closed meter remain available and are used in your reports and charts. However, you cannot add new readings or modify the settings of a closed meter.
Follow these steps to close a meter:
- Open your file and go to Meters.
- Click on the name of your meter and go to Properties.
- Click on Close meter at the bottom and confirm your action.
Reopening a closed meter
Closed meters are not displayed in the meter list but can still be accessed by clicking on Closed meters at the bottom of the page. As the owner or administrator of the record, you have the ability to reopen a closed meter.
Deleting a meter
To delete a meter and all associated readings, follow these steps:
- Open your record and go to Meters.
- Click on the name of your meter and go to Properties.
- Click on Delete meter at the bottom and confirm your action.
Why can't I create a new meter?
A free EnergyID record has a limit of 10 active meters. Only active meters allow you to add new readings. Closed meters retain their readings and are still processed in your reports, but you cannot add new readings. It is possible to reopen closed meters if there is still space within the limit of 10 meters.
Why can't I modify some settings of my meter?
Meters created by an external app often have predefined properties that cannot be modified by the user. These properties include metrics, unit, and reading type.
